Cranberry Sauce

Happy Thanksgiving to all of my US friends and family! I’ve lived in Canada for over 20 years, but I still like to celebrate.  I consider myself lucky to be able to celebrate two Thanksgiving holidays a year.

Every year, I debate whether I should make a healthy cranberry sauce or the good old standby sugary version (which I LOVE).  When I try the healthy version, I usually experiment.  Some years were OK, and some were downright gross!

One thing I never considered was adding booze.  Seriously! Why have I never thought of this before!  Anyway, this year, I made a healthier version but decided to add a bit of brandy.  OMG!  I think this recipe is a keeper!  Now I need to quickly write it down before I forget how to make it…

This recipe is not as sweet as the original made with cane sugar, but it is super tasty.  I can’t wait to try it with turkey and stuffing.

If you’d like to give it a go, here’s what you’ll need:

  • One bag of cranberries

  • One large orange

  • 3 Tablespoons brandy

  • Pure maple syrup

  • One cinnamon stick

Directions:

  1. Rinse cranberries and place in a saucepan.

  2. Zest the orange and add to the cranberries.

  3. Juice orange and set aside in a measuring cup.

  4. Add brandy to the measuring cup.

  5. Add enough maple syrup to bring the liquid up to 200ml.

  6. Add liquid to cranberries along with cinnamon stick.

  7. Boil until berries pop, approximately 5 minutes.  Cool.
